This year marks Easson-Vertex’s 22nd anniversary | Metalworking News

“22 years in business is not a celebrated date but when you are looking back at what you have done, there are some significant milestones that brought us here and got us to the point where we are not

“22 years in business is not a celebrated date but when you are looking back at what you have done, there are some significant milestones that brought us here and got us to the point where we are not far from celebrating more popular years for milestones,” said Paul Hammerton, one of two partners in Easson-Vertex, a company established to provide high-quality machine tool accessories used in the engineering, tool and die making, steel and metal working industries.

“Both my partner – Seamus Thompson – and I come from a new and used machine tool sales background and we knew how difficult it was to source machine tool accessories and parts such as DROs, vices, chucks and revolving centres, for example,” explained Hammerton.

“We were both introduced to the metal working engineering industries through our respective fathers. Seamus’ late dad Frank Thompson had a company named Harp Machine Tools and Seamus joined him soon after leaving school. The company initially bought and sold used machine tools before it began importing new machine tools.”

“My dad also traded in used machine tools and likewise I joined him at Mitcham Machine Tools shortly after leaving school. When he retired, I took over the company and will still trade in used machine tools if the opportunity presents itself but not very often. Our concentration is on importing and marketing machine tool accessories and parts, now.”

“Selling a drill chuck might not be as glamorous as selling a 5-axis machining center but in most cases that 5-axis machining center will not machine components if it does not have the correct accessory, fixture or tooling to allow it to operate.”

“The company was initially setup to sell DROs (digital readout systems) and linear scales. DROs are used for indicating the position of the cutting tool relative to a workpiece. The positions are detected by encoders mounted on the axis. They feature a numeric display and keyboard. DRO systems are used with milling and boring machines, lathes and surface grinders.”

The product range includes coolant pumps, collet chucks, clamping kits (individual spares available), vices, lathe chucks, power feed units, rotary tables, dividing heads, quick change toolposts, revolving centres, magnetic lifters, drill chucks, pull studs, angle plates, lubrication pumps, arbours, tapping attachments, magnetic chucks, knobs and handles, revolving grips, boring bars, turning tools, wheel balancing stands, verniers, micrometres, clock gauges, slotting attachments, hydraulic chucks, ISO tooling, NT tooling, BT tooling, R8 tooling, morse taper tooling, ER collets, reducing sleeves, threading tools, soft jaws, extra height soft jaws, T-nuts and many, many more

“When we got involved in the industry, CNC operated machines were a novelty and very unknown to many of the older generation. Therefore, you had to use a DRO if you wanted to accurately machine on a conventional lathe or mill. The DRO comprises a computer, encoders, and a numeric display that displays the location of the tool tip as the carriage or cross slide moves. It makes measuring easy and they are still used regularly for machines that don’t have a CNC operating system.”

“The DROs that we sourced are manufactured by a company named EASSON, hence the name in our company name. EASSON was established in 1995. It is a high-tech enterprise specialising in the design and manufacturing of precision measuring equipment and they obtained more than 20 national invention and utility model patents. Their product field includes DRO systems and precision optical profile projectors.”

“We also wanted to source other accessories to import and that is when we discovered VERTEX Machinery Works. The company was established in Taiwan in 1978. They are the largest Taiwanese exporters of conventional and CNC machine tool accessories and operate from a 10 000 square metre factory in Taichung. Vertex products are exported to more than 70 countries and more than 12 000 products are available.”

Easson-Vertex also have an extensive stock holding

“Our product range includes coolant pumps, collet chucks, clamping kits (individual spares available), vices, lathe chucks, power feed units, rotary tables, dividing heads, quick change toolposts, revolving centres, magnetic lifters, drill chucks, pull studs, angle plates, lubrication pumps, arbours, tapping attachments, magnetic chucks, knobs and handles, revolving grips, boring bars, turning tools, wheel balancing stands, verniers, micrometres, clock gauges, slotting attachments, hydraulic chucks, ISO tooling, NT tooling, BT tooling, R8 tooling, morse taper tooling, ER collets, reducing sleeves, threading tools, soft jaws, extra height soft jaws, T-nuts and many, many more.”

“Numerous advanced machining technologies are being leveraged to enable components to be manufactured more effectively, be they by high-production OEMs and tier-one suppliers, aftermarket product companies, race team and engine builders, and so on. Examples include honing, grinding, gear manufacturing, 5-axis machining, robotic and transfer line automation, reverse engineering, and prototyping (which might involve traditional subtractive machining or additive manufacturing / 3D printing). Data-driven manufacturing strategies are also increasingly being adopted as shops look to establish more effective measures for tight process control and high-quality.”

“We are able to supply and source all of these technologies. Our products are typically used on lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, drilling machines, machining centers and turning centers.”

Colturn collets joins the stable“Colturn CC was established in 1984 by Manfred Siebenhaar to supply the market with adaptors, collets and arbours. Before his passing in 2015 Manfred was known as the expert and supplier for these types of machine tool accessories.”

“The DROs that we sourced are manufactured by a company named EASSON, hence the name in our company name.”

“The family decided to close Colturn CC last year (2023) and we put in an offer to take over the business and stock, which was accepted. We have now re-established the product range and it forms an important part of our mix of products we market. The company sells spares and consumables related to the turning and machining of steel, wood and plastics.”

“When we look back we are grateful how we have been supported and grown. These premises are the third one that we have had to move to because we have outgrown the other two. We have been refurbishing and extending and our new showroom displays many of the accessories in an operational situation.”

“But clients don’t have to physically visit us. We also have a comprehensive online shopping mall.”
